Vaping
Understanding Vaping
Vaping has become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional smoking, particularly among younger generations.
It involves inhaling vaporized liquids, often containing nicotine, flavoring, and other chemicals, through an electronic device. While marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, vaping carries its own set of health risks, and recent studies have shown it can be highly addictive.
What Is Vaping?
Vaping devices, also known as e-cigarettes, heat liquid (commonly called e-liquid or vape juice) into an aerosol.
This aerosol is then inhaled into the lungs, delivering nicotine along with other chemicals. While vaping eliminates the combustion process present in smoking, it still exposes users to harmful substances, such as nicotine, formaldehyde, and toxic metals.
Health Risks of Vaping
Though often perceived as "healthier" than smoking, vaping can lead to serious health consequences, including:
Nicotine addiction:
Nicotine in e-cigarettes is just as addictive as in regular cigarettes, making it difficult to quit.
Lung damage:
Vaping has been linked to a condition known as EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury), which can result in hospitalization or even death.
Heart and lung disease:
Vaping can contribute to long-term cardiovascular and respiratory problems.
Gateway to smoking:
Many teens and young adults who vape are more likely to transition
to traditional cigarettes.
